Why it matters

A moody dive into 18th-century Russian folklore, blending haunted monasteries and eldritch darkness with old-world atmosphere.

  • Unearths a rarely seen setting in horror — imperial Russia’s shadowy backwoods feel genuinely unsettling.
  • Anchored by a compelling priest protagonist whose quiet gravitas holds the film together.
  • Lean, atmospheric pacing favors creeping dread over cheap jump scares; perfect for fans of slow-burn folk horror.
  • Subtitled English may deter some, but the authentic language adds to the immersive period vibe.
