For Halloween 1992, the BBC decides to broadcast an investigation into the supernatural, hosted by TV chat-show legend Michael Parkinson. Parky (assisted by Mike Smith, Sarah Greene & Craig Charles) and a camera crew attempt to discover the truth behind the most haunted house in Britain. This ground-breaking live television experiment does not go as planned, however.

Why it matters

A masterclass in found-footage and broadcast horror that blurred reality and fiction before “reality TV” was even a thing.

  • Pioneered the mockumentary format with unnervingly realistic performances and live-TV immediacy.
  • Michael Parkinson’s uncharacteristically straight-faced hosting adds chilling credibility to the unfolding nightmare.
  • A time capsule of early ’90s British TV culture turned spectral urban legend — still unnerving decades later.
  • For fans of media paranoia and psychological dread over jump scares, Ghostwatch is a blueprint for subtle terror.
