Krampus Origins

2018 ·1h 26m · ★ 5.5 (57)

The first World War rages on when a group of American soldiers find a mysterious artifact that can summon the ancient evil of the Krampus. After the men are killed in action, the artifact is sent to the commanding officer's widow who is a teacher at a small-town orphanage. The orphans accidentally summon the Krampus and the teacher, and her pupils are forced to battle this ancient evil.

Why it matters

A grimy, low-budget riff on holiday horror that trades mythic potential for grim WWI trench gloom and orphanage scares.

  • Attempts a rare WWI setting for Krampus, mixing war trauma with folklore—ambitious but undercooked
  • Lean practical effects and murky cinematography evoke a muddy, oppressive atmosphere, if not much clarity
  • For fans who savor DTV cult oddities and want to see Krampus outside the usual alpine chalet clichés
  • Falls short on narrative and scares, but worth a peek for completists tracking Krampus on-screen evolution
