Takashi Miike's 'Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo' Stuns as Yakuza Thriller Trailer Drops

Takashi Miike, celebrated for his work in horror and thriller cinema, returns with 'Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo,' set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2026. The film, which marks the third installment in the 'Bad Lieutenant' series, follows a standalone narrative connecting to Werner Herzog's 2009 'Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans.' NEON has unveiled the gripping official Japanese trailer, showcasing a dark and intense foray into the underworld of Tokyo's Yakuza.

Lily James and Shun Oguri lead the cast, a fascinating pairing given Miike's proclivity for casting decisions that evoke both surprise and intrigue. As reported by Bloody Disgusting and FirstShowing, the film traverses themes of addiction and moral ambiguity, staple elements in the 'Bad Lieutenant' lineage, but promised with Miike's signature style. Known for iconic films like 'Audition' and 'Ichi the Killer,' Miike's direction ensures a visceral experience that fans of his previous work can anticipate with fervor.

The trailer's release not only teases the film's narrative depth but also promises an immersive cinematic ride through a morally complex landscape, a hallmark of impactful storytelling in the crime thriller genre. With its selection for TIFF 2026, 'Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo' positions itself as a must-watch for aficionados of international and genre cinema, further cementing Miike's repute as a masterful storyteller unafraid to explore the darkest recesses of human nature.
