Ti West, the genre-bending director celebrated for horror gems like 'X' and 'Pearl', is taking a crack at Charles Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol' with a twist — one filled with dark comedy and supernatural horror. The film, entitled 'Ebenezer', casts Johnny Depp as the iconic Ebenezer Scrooge, aiming for a November theatrical release. According to Bloody Disgusting, this film serves as a litmus test for Depp’s enduring appeal as a leading man following a period of career turbulence.
Taking the familiar narrative of Scrooge's ghostly visits and infusing it with a horror aesthetic, 'Ebenezer' looks to walk the line between fright and festivity. As noted by First Showing, Paramount Pictures unveiled a second trailer promising a grimmer and more sardonic take, replete with the atmospheric edge Ti West is known for. The film challenges audiences to reconsider a well-worn tale through a monstrous and macabre lens.
This marks a significant artistic endeavor, as West attempts to merge horror's visceral thrills with the eternal optimism found in Dickens' tale of redemption. With Depp at the helm, the film is poised not only to capitalize on the actor's famed quirkiness but also to explore the inner darkness of Scrooge. If successful, 'Ebenezer' could reinvigorate interest in horror adaptations of literary classics, challenging the conventions of both genres.
