When Jessica moves back into her childhood home with her family, her youngest stepdaughter Alice develops an eerie attachment to a stuffed bear named Chauncey she finds in the basement. Alice starts playing games with Chauncey that begin playful and become increasingly sinister. As Alice’s behavior becomes more and more concerning, Jessica intervenes only to realize Chauncey is much more than the stuffed toy bear she believed him to be.

Why it matters

A slow-burn haunted toy tale that leans on unsettling child performances and creeping dread to explore family fracture and unseen terrors lurking in childhood nostalgia.

  • Pyper Braun’s portrayal of Alice anchors the film with an eerie, authentic vulnerability that keeps the supernatural stakes palpable.
  • Practical effects bring Chauncey’s sinister presence to life without relying on cheap jump scares or CG gimmicks.
  • For fans of psychological and domestic horror, the film situates its supernatural threat amid real-world family tensions and maternal anxieties.
  • Despite uneven pacing and underused talents like Tom Payne, the film’s atmosphere and subtle creepiness offer moments worth lingering on.
