99 Women
Der heiße Tod
Female prisoners endure the horrors of drug abuse, prostitution and rampant sadism at an island prison. When an escape attempt goes awry, the fugitives discover that escaping can be as dangerous as remaining in the prison.
Why it matters
A grim dive into exploitation-era women-in-prison horror that delivers lurid thrills and brutal atmosphere over subtlety.
- A snapshot of late '60s Eurotrash cinema blending prison drama with grindhouse sadism and taboo transgressions.
- Maria Rohm and Rosalba Neri bring a magnetic presence that elevates the lurid material beyond mere shock value.
- Practical effects and gritty set design capture the oppressive claustrophobia and menace endemic to the genre’s best entries.
- Not for subtlety seekers, but fans of exploitation history will find grim pleasures in its raw, unvarnished depiction of cruelty and desperation.
