Three American college students, Dick, his sister Jessica, and her British boyfriend Kevin, are traveling through Brazil on vacation when Dick, after attending a bizarre voodoo ceremony, develops strange powers. When their jeep breaks down near a small plantation in the jungle outside Rio, the site of a former slave rebellion 150 years ago, Dick uses his powers to raise the dead of six executed Negro slaves whom target the college kids and the residents of the plantation to seek revenge for their deaths

Why it matters

Black Demons delivers a scrappy, sweaty blend of supernatural vengeance and jungle-set horror steeped in early ’90s direct-to-video grit.

  • Practical effects and makeup lean into low-budget charm, with zombie designs that feel raw and unpolished in all the right ways.
  • A rare Brazilian-shot horror cult oddity that mixes voodoo folklore with revenge zombie tropes, predating the current global appetite for Afro-diasporic horror narratives.
  • The simmering atmosphere of a haunted plantation taps into historical trauma as a source of supernatural horror, grounding the undead chaos in a grim cultural reckoning.
  • Perfect for fans of off-the-radar ’90s horror who appreciate rough edges, regional flavor, and genre mash-ups that defy tidy categorization.
