The Roommate
When Sara, a young design student from Iowa, arrives for college in Los Angeles, she is eager to fit in and get to know the big city. Her wealthy roommate, Rebecca, is more than eager to take Sara under her wing and show her the ropes. The two become close, but when Sara begins to branch out and make more friends on campus, Rebecca becomes resentful. Alarmed, Sara moves in with her new boyfriend, causing Rebecca's behavior to take a violent turn.
Why it matters
A glossy psychosexual thriller that mines college-campus obsession with a sleek but familiar veneer.
- Leighton Meester brings a quietly unsettling charisma that elevates standard stalker tropes.
- Slick production design and LA setting add polished surface tension—think Pretty Little Liars meets Fatal Attraction.
- Plays it safe narratively, but the slow-burn descent into jealousy-fueled violence hooks fans of domestic psychological horror.
- For viewers craving a stylish, if predictable, female-driven stalker tale with a dose of ’90s thriller nostalgia.
