Eighteen year-old Corey Peterson and his mother move to a small town due to a trauma in their past. On Corey's first day at Hallows End High School, he's approached by Mason, also new in town, who tells him about the death of his friend at the school and advises Corey to stay away from the wrestler Perry and his gang. When two other students vanish, Corey decides to talk to Principal Rizcheck, who pays no attention to him. Corey and Mason investigate the secret about the school and expose the dark truth about Hallows End and the missing students.

Why it matters

A throwback high school horror that blends slasher tropes with a creeping small-town conspiracy, The Frightening leans into early-2000s teen dread with surprising atmosphere.

  • Practical effects and gory set pieces recall the heyday of direct-to-video horror, delivering visceral thrills for fans of grindhouse-style brutality.
  • The film’s slow-burn unraveling of Hallows End High’s sinister secrets taps into classic “evil school” narratives, echoing lesser-known ’80s and ’90s cult gems.
  • Corey and Mason’s outsider dynamic grounds the story in genuine teen paranoia, even if the pacing sometimes stumbles.
  • Not a polished studio effort, but a worthwhile dig for viewers who love regional horror and the era’s indie horror ecosystem.
